The purpose of this page is to explain how to upload any HTML document to the ULL ENGR server.

The standard method of FTP cannot be used, because some nervous SysAdmin won't give the access. Which I guess I can understand because some seriously sensitive documents are stored on the ULL server -- yeah right!! (What do they think they are running?? NASA??)

Instead you will need to use the FTP portion of Netscape Composer. By following these directions, you can upload any files/documents to the server.

1) Create a directory on your computer. Remember the name and location.

2) Open your browser and visit each page that is stored on the ENGR server. This will include the index.htm, calendar.htm, etc.. but will not include the Discussion Board, which is hosted on a different server. While you are viewing the page, click File -> Save As, and save the file in the directory you just created. You will want to do this each time you are going to edit the pages, in case there was some editing done at a different computer since the last time you saved a copy.

3) You can now use any editor to edit the pages. Programs like Frontpage, Dreamweaver, NetObjects Fusion, even Notepad (my personal favorite) will all make good editors. If you tried to use the Netscape Composer as your editor, you would not be able to have graphics which are referred to as DLLs. An example of this is the page counter from LinkExchange. Netscape would try to load the graphic into the server directory, but this will not work, because the graphic is called from the LinkExchange server... and it must be or the counter won't count!!

4) After saving all your files into the local directory that was created in step one, it is now time to open Netscape Composer to create what I will call a "dummy" page. Once Composer is open, type a few characters and save the page in the local directory (same one as in step #1). We will use Composer to upload this html file, along with all the HTML, graphics, and other files.

5) The location bar should now have the path on your Hard Drive to your directory, all the way up to the "dummy.htm" file... Now click the Publish button and a window will pop up, you'll need to enter in the following information:

Page Title: this doesn't matter
HTML Filename: dummy.htm
HTTP or FTP Location to publish to: http://engr.ull.edu/mche/student/asme/
User name: this info is given on a need to know basis
Passwork: this info is given on a need to know basis

IMPORTANT NOTE == BEFORE HITTING OK, YOU MUST CLICK THE RADIO BUTTON NEXT TO 'All files in page's folder'
By doing this the small window under the radio button will fill with all the files in the folder which was created in step #1. Make sure that all files are selected, and then you may hit OK.

6) A small dialog box will pop up and you can watch as the files are uploaded one at a time. After completion another box will pop up to let you know the number of files that were uploaded.
